CHAPTER NINETEEN

“Ouch!” the man cried, pulling his finger away from his shiny new toy. He’d been running his finger appreciatively over its fine, sharp teeth.

He’d cut himself, and his finger was bleeding a little. He stuck his finger in his mouth and sucked away the blood. The wound hurt slightly, but in a good way. The item he’d bought just now at a nearby medical supply store had already proved itself a formidable cutting device. And it was going to have some serious cutting to do in just a little while.

Peering closely at the surgical saw, he imagined it moving effortlessly through the vertebrae of a human neck, completely beheading his forthcoming victim. He was sure the beheading itself would be very easy. This saw was a tool for amputation, after all. It was designed to slice through much tougher bones, including thighs and ankles.

It will be an interesting challenge, he thought.

But he wasn’t worried about making a mess. Even a beheading didn’t have to be sloppy. He’d strangle his victim before beheading him, so the man’s heart wouldn’t be pumping and there wouldn’t be much bleeding to speak of. He could create a neat little vignette complete with lighted votive candles.

I should try to enjoy this, he thought.

After all, the series of murders was about to come to an end.

But one thing troubled him.

Not a peep about the previous three murders had leaked out to the press.

Unless the public got word of them sooner or later, they’d be utterly in vain.

The story is what matters.

The story is everything.

And if the police and city authorities were going to be close-lipped about the whole thing, he was going to have to take such matters into his own hands.

It’s time to make a few phone calls, he thought, reaching for his cellphone.
